Arpita Singh is an Indian artist born in Baranagar in Kolkata, West Bengal, India. She is known to be a figurative artist and a modernist. Her works show both storylines and carnival images arranged in a curiously subversive way. Her artist endeavor is an expedition without destination. Her works are images of her surroundings. She paints what she feels inside her heart. A lot of her works are depictions of the situations that influenced women in the longer run. She often uses traditional Indian art forms and aesthetics in her works.
Arpita attended the Delhi Polytechnic in New Delhi from 1954 to 1959 and graduated with a Diploma in fine Arts. After graduation, Arpita Singh worked at the weaver’s service center, in the ministry of textiles under the Government of India. Her works during this period of time are reflected in her works.
She also worked with the Cottage Industries Restoration Program, a body of the Government of India. ‘The Unknown’ an artists’ group was established under her membership in the 1960s and they exhibited their first solo show in 1962.
She exhibited in the Royal Academy of Arts at London (1982), the Centre Georges Pompidou, Paris (1986), the show in Geneva (1987), and at the Art Gallery of New South Wales Sydney (1993).
She is married to the fellow artist Paramjit Singh and currently, they live in Nizamuddin East, New Delhi.
